ONI was the first company to recognize that ice storage is an innovative solution for the efficient use and storage of energy in industrial cooling processes. In conjunction with renewable energies, ice storage systems allow surplus energy, for example from photovoltaic systems, to be stored for later use. This enables grid-friendly operation by storing “cold” when electricity tariffs are low and then releasing it when needed (high electricity tariffs). In addition, ice storage can bridge peak loads, allowing the refrigeration system to be optimally dimensioned and operating costs to be reduced. This peak load capping of electrical supply power will become increasingly important in the near future.
Ice storage tanks can also be used as heat sources for heating buildings or for process heat, with the storage tank being regenerated using waste heat or environmental heat. With an energy density of up to 70 kWh/m³, ice storage systems significantly outperform conventional battery storage systems and enable efficient load management. In addition, they are made of cost-effective, environmentally friendly and readily available materials and are not subject to capacity degradation.
ONI-Wärmetrafo GmbH integrates ice storage systems specifically into cooling and refrigeration systems in order to reduce the load on the grid and save energy costs. High-performance ice storage systems can be fully charged or discharged within a few hours. On the other hand, ice storage systems have a very low self-discharge rate, which enables storage over several days to several weeks.
