The Smart Family continues to grow: Vibrations provide information about mill health

At Fakuma 2026, Hellweg Maschinenbau will present its new Smart Cut Guard module at booth A1-1005. This module is an optional add-on for the Smart Control system of its mills. Using a vibration sensor, it detects the vibrations emanating from the machine. The processed data then provides early warnings of emerging problems before they manifest in other ways. For example, users receive alerts about defective bearings or dull blades long before they cause significant damage. Depending on the results, maintenance intervals can be extended or necessary repairs can be scheduled in advance.
For local use, Smart Cut Guard can be integrated into the Smart Control system. Alternatively, with the help of another module, the data can be automatically uploaded to a cloud service to which Hellweg has exclusive access. In the event of an alarm, the company can then contact its customers immediately. This option is particularly recommended for mills that need to process high tonnages around the clock.
Managing Director Mark Hellweg explains: “Vibrations are detrimental to machines that use cutting tools or knives. Our mills are known for their virtually vibration-free operation because they are robustly constructed and equipped, for example, with rotors machined from a single block of material. This increases the inertia and reduces vibration to almost zero. This special feature makes it very easy for us to detect irregularities, which manifest as vibrations, at a very early stage. This allows users to schedule necessary interventions for times that incur the lowest possible costs – long before damage leads to consequential costs.”
