Recycling PET is not only a contribution to environmental protection, but also economically sound: The transport and production costs of recycled PET are significantly lower than those of newly manufactured, fossil-based PET, and CO₂ emissions can be reduced by up to 60%. Used PET containers can be recycled multiple times – through chemical or mechanical processes. Often, the material is processed into rPET granules, which, however, requires additional heating, transport, and handling processes – and thus also increases the CO₂ footprint. Furthermore, rPET granules are generally more expensive than the direct use of post-consumer PET flakes.
