About us

Since 1938, the Fraunhofer Institute for Structural Durability and System Reliability LBF in Darmstadt has been synonymous with application-oriented research into safe, reliable, and high-performance products and systems. It has been part of the Fraunhofer Society since 1962. Starting in 2026, the institute will undergo a strategic realignment to sharpen its profile as a partner for comprehensive research and development services across the entire product lifecycle. These services include material selection and development, component evaluation, system integration, validation, and operational monitoring.
The focus is on combining traditional engineering expertise with digital methods, artificial intelligence, and digital twins. Specifically, Fraunhofer LBF examines interactions at the interfaces between materials, components, and systems, developing solutions that integrate reliability, safety, efficiency, and circularity.
The institute offers services in four key application areas: mobility systems and technologies, mechanical and plant engineering, plastics and chemistry, and energy and cleantech applications. These areas include automotive and aerospace systems, shipbuilding, micromobility and infrastructure, precision machinery and production systems, the chemical industry and plastics processing, and renewable energies and hydrogen technologies.
Additionally, Fraunhofer LBF is systematically developing new market access opportunities in defense.
